QUIXOTIC BOOKS
What is Quixotic Books?
Opened in August 2021, Quixotic Books is Toby’s extremely idealistic, unrealistic and impractical quest to own a bookshop different to any other in Australia. Quixotic Books does this by curating books not easily found in Australia, with a focus on history, historical fiction, and scholarly reading. To choose the stock, he pours over hundreds-of-thousands of titles of remainder books from outside of Australia.
What is a remainder book? Well, when a publisher prints thousands of copies of a book, they can never be sure how many will sell in a given time. Sooner or later, normal bookshops need to move onto the next big thing, so they send their remaining copies back to the publisher. Now the publisher has thousands of copies in their warehouse, and they can either recycle them or offer them back out at a discount. It’s great when they choose the latter, as Toby at Quixotic Books can afford to ship them to Tasmania having chosen books that we never got to see in the first place!
Born in Tasmania, Toby grew up in a family who adored travelling the world and have ticked off a fair share of “places to visit”. He always found himself hunting down a bookshop in every country - whether he spoke the language or not! All this travel and books had him studying archaeology, creative writing, and then librarianship.
Other than the public reading room with complimentary tea and a room for hire overlooking the CBD of Launceston, Toby also offers a Book Finder service. Using his librarian skills, he’s well set-up to find the book you’ve been struggling to find. Whether it’s a special edition, out-of-print title, or cherished book from your youth, he’ll find it.
